The Pelloby installation team have been busy at the BMW Group’s Swindon MINI site over the last few weeks, installing not one, but three new cranes in their baler room, including a 10 tonne double girder overhead crane with supporting gantry steelwork.
10 tonne double girder crane design
The baler room forms an important part of the BMW Group’s Swindon MINI plant’s waste disposal processes, allowing them to compress materials for recycling. The new cranes were installed to aid with this procedure by providing lifting access to baler machines.
The main overhead crane was built with a 6.2 metre span and four metre height of lift in order to fully utilise the available space according to the client’s specific requirements.
The supporting gantry steelwork comprised of a double run of suitably sized universal beam section fitted with a rail securely welded to its upper flange. This provided a total long travel distance of 13.5 metres, and each the gantry beams was supported by three vertical columns. All the necessary fixings, end stops, base plates, cap plates and bracings were also supplied as standard.
The double girder design of the crane accommodated a VT3 wire rope crab unit from French manufacturer Verlinde. A divorced pendant provided control over the dual hoisting speeds, the crab movement and the bridge’s long travel operation.
Two freestanding monorail cranes
In addition to this 10 tonne double girder crane, Pelloby were also commissioned to design, produce and install two monorail cranes, again with their own supporting gantry steelwork.
The first of these was an eight tonne crane with a beam length of 17.4 metres and a 3.8 metre height of lift, while the other was made for capacities up to three tonnes, had a four metre lift height and a 10 metre beam length. Both were fitted with VT wire rope hoists and the latter with a special 500kg SWL grab attachment.
Operator training for the plant’s staff and ongoing servicing and maintenance support were both arranged and carried out by the Pelloby servicing department to ensure best use of the cranes now and in the future.
