Almost four years on from the London 2012 Olympics and the debate about whether the games have lived up to the desired legacy for sport in the UK still continues.
Prior to the games Pelloby were asked to design and manufacture two boat handling cranes to be used before, during and after the sailing events taking place at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy in Dorset. Thanks to our weather resistant design and galvanising capabilities these outdoor cranes are still in regular use – meaning at least one aspect of the London 2012 legacy is standing strong today.
Outdoor cranes built to last
Able to support loads of up to 2.5 tonnes each, these two power slewing post jib cranes are still regularly used to lift small boats and dinghies in and out of the water at Portland Harbour situated at Osprey Quay in Dorset.
As with any piece of machinery built for use in a coastal environment, these outdoor cranes had to be designed to withstand wind, rain, seawater and everything else typical of quayside adverse working conditions.
With this in mind, our expert team created a design which saw all the mechanical elements and hoisting equipment housed inside the body of each boat handling crane, to keep them shielded from the elements.
Furthermore not only was a distinctive blue and white paint finish utilised to offer striking aesthetics, but the cranes were also galvanised to help protect against erosion and wearing. These features helped elongate the working lifespan of the crane, meaning it will stay in great working condition for years to come.
Seeing the boat handling cranes through – from design to installation
Not only did Pelloby design and manufacture all elements of these two outdoor cranes, we also managed delivery to Portland Harbour, took care of the subsequent installation of systems and carried out final commissioning on site.
Our service and support team were also able to administer operator training to site personnel to ensure the system would be used safely and correctly going forward.
