The Canal & River Trust, an organisation responsible for the upkeep of 2,000 miles of UK waterways, has been manufacturing and maintaining gates for locks from a factory in Bilston in the West Midlands for over 50 years. Pelloby recently supplied this workshop with a brand new Pelloby 10 tonne crane.
Double girder 10 tonne crane
Locks are chambers which allow a boat or barge to pass from one stretch of water to another by raising and lowering the water level as required. The volume of water at any given moment is controlled by entry points in the lock’s gates and that’s why the production of these gates is vital to the Canal and River Trust’s ongoing operations.
The workshop handles several of these hefty structures on a daily basis via a series of existing cranes, including one four tonne single girder Pelloby system. However, the decision was recently made that a new duty crane was required to lift heavier gates.
Pelloby were chosen to design, manufacture and install the new 10 tonne crane, which is not only used to lift the wood and steel used to produce these gates, but also provides the functionality to rotate them for work on their undersides to be carried out.
The finished 10 tonne crane has a double girder design and runs along the workshop’s existing gantry steelwork. The beam, which has a 12 metre span features a striking red paint finish.
A wire rope crab unit was selected offering dual speeds for a high level of operator control. The long travelling motion also moves at two speeds, with both motions being governed by a pendant handset.

Managed through to installation and commissioning
Dave Constable, Team Leader at the Canal & River Trust workshop explained why Pelloby were chosen to manufacture the new lifting system.
“We had already worked with Pelloby when they supplied the existing four tonne crane that we still regularly use in our workshop, so it made sense to ask them to quote for the new crane.
“The installation and commissioning process went smoothly and our team have found the 10 tonne crane extremely easy to use, allowing us to achieve exactly what we needed the system to achieve.”
