As the UK’s biggest jib crane manufacturer, jibs of all sizes are always in production in our Telford factory. Here we’re taking a quick look at one such system – a five tonne jib crane for Somerset bathroom specialists Offsite Solutions.
Five tonne jib crane design
Offsite Solutions build premier bathroom pods in their factory at Highbridge. Recently they decided to bolster their operational capabilities by having a bespoke jib crane installed on the outside of their workshop to test lift their pods.
Pelloby were eventually chosen as the preferred supplier for the project and our team set to work designing and manufacturing a bespoke five tonne jib crane that adequately met Offsite’s requirements.
The finished jib crane stood at over 7.5metres in order to give the 6.4metre height of lift which provided enough headroom to lift the pods.
The five tonne jib crane’s arm was designed to a radius of four metres and slew stops were fitted to limit its swinging movement to 180°. The addition of a parking lock keeps the jib arm securely in place while the system is not in use.
Outdoor protection and hoist canopy
In addition to a design robust enough to support loads of up to five tonnes, this A3 duty rated crane also featured a coating of galvanised protective primer to help ensure the longevity and maximum efficiency of the system.
The Verlinde dual speed Eurochain VR hoist that Pelloby supplied with the crane was provided with further protection from the elements in the form of a parking hoist canopy.
Before the jib crane’s installation the company were relying on a haulier with a HIAB lorry and an outside contractor to test lift the pods. Offsite’s Steve Dancer explained that “as well as the cost saving the jib gives us greater flexibility and better control of our pod test lifting as contractor availability is no longer a concern.”
