Optimising the space available in a workplace is often a key concern when designing a lifting solution and that is certainly true of an underslung crane we produced for the UK’s leading window specialist Anglian Home Improvements.
A key part of Anglian’s manufacturing facility at their headquarters in Norwich consists of a lower level where stillages used to handle glass are delivered through a roller shutter door and a separate area where these items are processed which is situated on an upper level mezzanine floor.
Underslung crane design
Anglian Home Improvements asked Pelloby to design an overhead crane which could transfer the stillages from the ground floor to the higher level. However, as the stillages were stacked in bays of up to three high, the headroom between the mezzanine floor and the building’s ceiling was minimal.
Therefore our solution was to install an underslung crane with gantry beams which were attached to the existing roof structure rather than supported by more traditional columns.
This meant the crane was able to move freely along the gantry rail and operators could position it above the lower level to collect stillages as they were delivered, while still providing the required clearance above the racks on the upper floor.
This electric overhead underslung crane can support 1.5 tonne safe working loads and has a 12000mm span. A Verlinde VT electric wire rope hoist was fitted, which along with the travelling motion is operated from a radio controlled handset.

Mike Jobling, Production Engineer at Anglian explained that Pelloby fully grasped the nature of their requirements from day one.
“We’ve worked with Pelloby in the past on multiple crane installations and so we knew that they had the design capabilities to meet our needs on this job. From sending a representative to site to take measurements to installation and final commissioning, Pelloby kept our requirements in mind throughout the project.”
